Madison County Detention Center Overview

The sheriff's detention page identifies Madison County Detention Center as the local jail facility for Canton and the rest of Madison County. It is operated by the Madison County Sheriff's Department under Sheriff Randy Tucker. The jail holds pretrial detainees, sentenced county inmates, people held on state or probation matters, and federal detainees when accepted under the official U.S. Marshals Service agreement in the research file. That mix matters for search work because a name on the jail roster may be there due to a municipal arrest, a sheriff arrest, an MDOC hold, or a federal process.

The detention center has two official address contexts. The sheriff's public contact and map address is 2941 U.S. Highway 51, Canton, MS 39046. The roster detail and inmate handbook use 2935 Highway 51 South, Canton, MS 39046 for detention, mail, and canteen context. Those addresses appear to describe adjacent parts of the sheriff and jail complex south of Canton on the U.S. Highway 51 corridor. For mail and money-order purposes, use the detention address listed in the handbook. For general sheriff contact or map routing, use the sheriff public address.

Madison County Jail Capacity

The jail's capacity history is unusually well documented. The detention division page says the current sheriff's office and jail complex opened on April 1, 1991 as a 250-bed facility. The Madison County comprehensive plan gives the later growth: a 144-bed addition opened in 2003, and a later 132-bed addition brought the planned total to 526 beds. Vera and Bureau of Justice Statistics county data reported rated capacity at 528 in both 2022 and 2023. The live roster is different from capacity. The current inmate listing inspected for this build showed an inmate count of 139 on June 18, 2026 at 6:00 PM, which is only a point-in-time snapshot.

Vera/BJS data also shows why one roster count should not be treated as the jail's usual population. The 2023 total jail population figure was 270, with 261 listed as pretrial custody and 9 as sentenced custody. The same source listed 122 federal holds and 110 USMS holds in 2023. Madison County's jail population fell from 434 in 2019 to 270 in 2023, while the rated capacity remained near 528. That trend does not prove today's population, but it provides useful context for the current roster count.

Madison County Detention Center Roster

The correct lookup tool for current Madison County Detention Center custody is the current inmate listing linked from the sheriff's detention page. It is a plain list, not a search form. The inspected page showed date, time, facility name, current inmate listing label, and inmate count. Each row included the row number, inmate name, inmate ID, date of birth, age, intake date and time, arresting agency, and first listed charge.

  1. Open the sheriff detention page or the direct current inmate listing.
  2. Check the roster date and time before relying on the count.
  3. Use browser find for a last name because the roster has no search box.
  4. Click the inmate name to open the detail profile.
  5. Call 601-855-0739 when current custody, bond, release, or visit timing must be confirmed.

The detail page can add height, weight, race, sex, hair and eye color, complexion, offense date, case number, intake number, arresting agency, a photo or no-photo marker, written bond, cash bond, and a charge table with court and bond amount. The county roster is for jail custody. Once a sentenced person is assigned to MDOC custody, the better search path is the Mississippi Department of Corrections locator rather than the county jail list.

The current Madison County inmate listing is visible in the roster screenshot captured for the build.

Madison County Detention Contact

Use the detention number for custody confirmation, visit timing, housing questions, and release-status checks. Use the sheriff's main number for general sheriff department routing. The research did not locate public lobby hours or a published records counter schedule for the jail, so calling before travel is the most reliable path.

Madison County Jail Visits

Visitation at Madison County Detention Center is by cellblock Monday through Friday. The sheriff page tells visitors to contact the jail in advance to learn the inmate's cellblock and assigned visit time. The linked visitation PDF is old but remains on the official site, so exact times should be confirmed by phone before travel. The handbook says visits last 20 minutes, the inmate must register visitors, and visitors must be present and pre-registered 15 minutes before the assigned time.

Dress rules in the handbook bar bare midriffs, low-cut tops, tank tops, shorts, mini skirts, see-through clothing, sports-team attire, and gang colors. Food, drink, tobacco, cameras, and recording devices are not allowed in visitation. These rules are operational rules, not court rules, so jail staff can turn away a visit if a person arrives late, lacks ID, is not on the list, or does not meet the dress code.

Madison County Jail Mail

County jail mail and deposits use the detention address, not the sheriff public map address. The handbook says mail must include the inmate name and inmate number. Incoming mail is opened and inspected for contraband, while legal mail is opened in the inmate's presence. Mail without the inmate number is returned to the sender. Inmate-to-inmate mail is not allowed. Publications must come from a publishing company and cannot contain banned sexual or scantily dressed material.

Madison County Booking Intake

Madison County does not publish a full booking workflow page, but the roster and handbook show the main steps. People arrested by Madison SO, Canton PD, Ridgeland PD, Madison PD, Gluckstadt PD, MDOC, park rangers, or other agencies may appear when accepted at the detention center. Intake records identity, demographics, arresting agency, intake date and time, charges, court fields, and bond information. The booking number format observed begins with BK and digits, with detail-page suffixes.

Property and medical rules are also part of intake. Personal property and clothing are stored until release, and an inmate may release all personal property to one chosen person on visitation day only. Money on hand at arrest is deposited into the canteen account. The handbook says QCHC provides medical, dental, and mental-health care. Medical requests use a request form except for emergencies, and the handbook lists visit and prescription fees while stating inability to pay will not prevent medical service.

About Madison County Jail

The jail has a long local history. The sheriff detention page says Madison County has had at least five jails since the sheriff's office was formed. The first known jail was built in Livingston in 1833. Another jail was built in Canton around 1834 and reportedly burned before 1870. The 1870 Fulton Street jail was used until 1969 and is now used by the Madison County Historical Society. A 74-bed jail built in 1968 south of Canton was abandoned in 1991 and demolished in 2000. Broader county population and search context is summarized on the Madison County inmate population page.

The current complex opened in 1991 and includes kitchen, laundry, and medical facilities, plus one-, two-, four-, eight-, ten-, and twenty-person cells and handicap-accessible cells. The detention page says Madison County correctional officers receive structured training, are certified by the State of Mississippi, and are inspected by state and federal agencies. The inmate handbook adds local detail about meals delivered to cells, recreation by cell and weather, law-library access by request, religious services, grievance steps, and a grievance box for matters directed to the Warden or Jail Administrator.
